Boone Memorial Hospital employees, as well as most health care workers across the world, have worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. While most businesses were closing, health care workers and first responders were facing the epidemic head on.

"Our employees were very adaptable and cooperative during this unprecedented time," said Boone Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Underwood. "They all accepted the challenge with willingness and compassion. Some employees were even asked to take on new roles, at times," he said.

The hospital's innovative plans to reassign employees throughout the crises kept nearly all Boone Memorial employees working.

"Our staff has been very gracious," said Underwood. "Our Board of Directors and administration have been praised for not laying people off. While we appreciate the gratitude, it is our employees who should be praised," he said.

"To show our appreciation, members of our hospital board, along with administration approved a bonus, which we entitled 'Hero Pay'. Each hospital employee received the bonus," he explained.

"I think I can confidently speak on behalf of our patients and community when I say, 'this bonus was well deserved and our healthcare workers are truly heroes'."
