Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH) in Madison, WV will host a Lunch and Learn focused on Women’s Cardiovascular Health on Thursday, February 27th. BMH Cardiologist and Boone County native, Casey Hager, will lead the presentation and group discussion.

The event will be held on the hospital campus in Private Dining (1st Floor) from 11:30am-12:30pm, followed by a group picture with Dr. Hager. Guests will receive a small gift and complimentary lunch. Hospital employees and luncheon participants are asked to wear red in support of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) National Wear Red Movement.

According to the AHA, the color red is a confidence booster and makes you feel powerful, one reason why the organization chose the color red to signify their fight against the No. 1 killer in women. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that it’s also the color of our hearts.

Heart Disease in the United States:

Reference: Centers for Disease Control and the American Heart Association

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

  • One person dies every 37 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.

  • About 647,000 Americans die from heart disease each year—that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.

  • Heart disease costs the United States about $219 billion each year from 2014 to 2015. This includes the cost of health care services, medicines, and lost productivity due to death.

The AHA admits that despite their progress, women are still dying. They’re still unaware of their risks and the facts. The AHA reminds us that now is not the time for complacency. It’s time to stand stronger, speak louder and join in the fight.
