Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH) opened its new Sleep Center on Jan. 30, 2022. In celebration of the Sleep Center opening, BMH held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Jan. 28. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place outside of the BMH Specialty Clinic, which houses the Sleep Center and is located across the street from the main hospital. Tours of the Sleep Center were offered, and a reception was held immediately following the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

“We truly believe this is a needed service for our patients, and we are thrilled that we have been able to bring it home to our community," said Angie Christian, BSN, RN, CRNI; BMH Chief Operating Officer.

"The BMH Sleep Center uses advanced software and technology," said Willie Carte, RRT, Director of the BMH Respiratory Department. "A sleep study at the BMH Sleep Center provides the information necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of various sleep disorders. For evaluation of a sleep disorder, patients may be asked to stay overnight," said Carte. "The overnight evaluation helps our clinicians diagnose a sleep disorder and recommend a treatment plan. We also offer daytime sleep testing, when needed."

During the overnight stay, clinicians monitor heart rate, breathing, sleep patterns, muscle movement, brain waves and oxygen levels to uncover potentially dangerous sleep disorders.

“Our new, state-of-the-art equipment and freshly renovated facility provides excellent

diagnostic capabilities in a comfortable environment for our patients," said BMH Sleep Center Manager Dennis Butcher, RRT.

THE BMH SLEEP CENTER OFFERS THE FOLLOWING DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION SERVICES:

  • Sleep Study (in the lab)

  • CPAP Titration (in the lab)

  • MSLT/MWT - Multiple Sleep Latency Test/Maintenance of Wakefulness Test

  • Home Sleep Test - set up and instructions (dependent upon approval)

BMH Sleep Center Medical Director Jeffrey Werchowski, M.D. explains how lack of sleep or quality sleep can affect overall health.

"Good sleep is vital to achieving optimal health. Sleep disorders are very common," explained Dr. Werchowski. "However, it's important to determine why you aren't getting adequate sleep and to develop a treatment plan based on your specific needs. Sleep issues can affect mood, weight, hormone levels, the immune system, the cardiovascular system, and more," he said.

The BMH Sleep Center features private rooms, each equipped with a full-size bed, flat-screen TV, and a bathroom.

"The rooms are very nice and provide the ideal environment for a sleep study. We want to help our patients improve their sleep which, in turn, can improve their overall health. Give us a call and let us see if we can help!" concluded Carte.
