Boone Memorial Hospital Nurse, Sharelle Adkins, named DAISY Award Honoree

Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH) kicked-off its DAISY Award program in January, 2021 and announced its second Honoree last month - Sharelle Adkins, LPN.

"The DAISY Nurse Leader Award recognizes nurses who are extraordinary in the impact they have on compassionate patient care," said BMH Chief Nursing Officer, Terri Castle, BSN. "We have amazing nurses here at BMH and I'm so happy we now have a prestigious award to celebrate and recognize nurses like Sharelle."

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a very public way.

Ten nominees were recognized during the BMH DAISY Award Ceremony, held on Friday, November 19th:

BMH DAISY Award Selection Committee Chair, Ladie Viars, RN (Clinical Education) explains the award criteria.

"Any RN, LPN, or APRN is eligible to receive The DAISY Award. The winner, known as the Honoree, can be any nurse leader who impacts patient care directly including supervisors, managers, educators or nurses who specialize in case management, informatics or patient flow. We give two awards annually and accept nominations year round," Viars explains.

November's Honoree, Sharelle, works on the Inpatient Floor.

"I couldn't be happier for Sharelle," said BMH Nursing Inpatient Floor Manager, Stuard Haugen, RN. "Sharelle is humble, caring and an asset to our team. Her skill level, along with her compassion, make her an excellent choice. We are very proud of her!"

The Boone Memorial Hospital DAISY Award Committee established the following criteria, which is used in the selection process:

D - DEDICATION

The nurse should demonstrate extraordinary clinical skills in the delivery of compassionate care.

A - ATTITUDE

The nurse should display a positive attitude, while demonstrating professionalism.

I - INSPIRATION

The nurse should inspire others to be passionate about their profession.

S - SELFLESSNESS

The nurse should display a sense of selflessness in the care they provide.

Y - YES WE CAN spirit

The nurse should have a YES WE CAN attitude and shed a positive light in all situations.

Viars commends Sharelle for striving daily to meet the BMH DAISY Award recipient criteria.

"This award couldn't have gone to a more deserving nurse," said Viars. "Sharelle is such an amazing nurse and person. She is a very important part of our nursing staff. Her genuine compassionate care, along with her years of experience in various clinical settings, is a blessing to our patients and families. She always has a smile and kind word. Sharelle makes the world a better place."

"Sharelle has a heart of gold. She always puts patients first and is dedicated to her job. Her care is genuine."

"Sharelle was always very kind and helpful and she really knew how to put my Father-in-law at ease. Her genuine compassion was helpful in his healing process. She was instrumental in my Father-in-laws recovery. We cant thank her enough."

Boone Memorial Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Underwood, explains that Sharelle's patients are always put first.

"Our patients are top priority to Sharelle. She has a calming, friendly personality that makes our patients feel at ease. When I presented Sharelle with The DAISY Award, she said to her fellow coworkers and nominees 'we are all DAISIES'. That comment is a true testament to Sharelle's humble, caring nature. We appreciate her work ethic and dedication," Underwood concluded.
