Boone Memorial Hospital Physician, Chad Adkins, DO named WVSOM Primary Care Outstanding Preceptor

Each year, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) presents Outstanding Preceptor Awards to physicians who exhibit professionalism and demonstrate service to students, including a commitment to teaching, mentoring, and giving back to the education process.

Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH) Physician, Chad Adkins, DO has been named the 2021 West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Primary Care Outstanding Preceptor for the south central region.

"Dr. Adkins devotes a significant amount of his time teaching and training medical students at BMH, and this award illustrates Dr. Adkins’ effectiveness in these efforts," said Boone Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Underwood. "We value his knowledge and dedication to our community and future physicians."

Dr. Adkins teaches between 15-20 students per year. He was selected among 55 other preceptors through a student voting process.

"This award is an honor," said Dr. Adkins. "I feel privileged to provide medical care to our community and to pass it on to the next generation."

Dr. Adkins explains that his primary role as a preceptor is to teach medical students rural primary care.

"I incorporate mentoring the students on what life is like as a physician. Both the personal and professional responsibilities that come with being a physician."

An award presentation and celebration of Dr. Adkins was held Monday, October 4th at Boone Memorial Hospital. BMH Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Underwood was joined by WVSOM Regional Assistant Deans Drs. Michael Peterson and Brandon Rose, who presented the award to Dr. Adkins. Refreshments were served in the hospital's Private Dining following the presentation.
